We're transforming McMillan into a safe space for all... starting with our children
For nearly 100 years, McMillan Memorial Library has stood in the heart of Nairobi as a pillar of our nation’s history. Over the past eight years, Book Bunk has worked to reimagine what the future of this and other public libraries could look like. Now, we need your help to build that future for our children and generations to come. We need KES 25 million to transform the children’s section of McMillan Memorial Library into a warm, safe, and inspiring space for young readers. Your contribution will support the installation of sanitation facilities, essential repairs, child-sized furniture, and expanded digital and physical collections. It will also provide learning devices and implement strong child protection measures – all hallmarks of our fully restored libraries in Kaloleni and Eastlands. Together, we can make this vision a reality and ensure that every child has a space to learn, play, and dream in the heart of the city.
The Journey to a Fully Restored McMillan
This is just one part of the full restoration of McMillan Memorial Library. Over the last two years, we’ve worked with experts from around the world to plan the restoration and to safeguard its rare collections through digitisation. Urgent roof and basement repairs are scheduled to begin in late 2025, this is a huge milestone! Help us take the next step in bringing this historic library back to life.
Once we have transformed McMillan Memorial into a space fit for children, our next goal is to make the library fully accessible to our senior citizens. This parallel campaign will raise funds to install an elevator, build ramps and fire escapes, upgrade sanitation facilities, and develop accessible collections and programmes that will enable our elders to learn, connect, and belong with dignity. Outreach to partners for this phase of work is ongoing. Please reach out to us directly if you’d like to explore how you, your organisation, or someone you know can support this next step.
