Vibrant public spaces in Kenya are rare and often fall short of realising their full potential to address some of their communities’ most pressing challenges. This is especially true for public libraries. Many of those that do exist are outdated and in poor condition, with collections, programmes, and services that fail to meet or reflect the needs, interests, and cultural contexts of the communities they serve. As a result, underserved communities continue to face knowledge gaps and miss out on valuable cultural opportunities that could inspire learning, creativity, and connection. Lack of access to good information means that these communities will continue to be robbed of the opportunities to empower themselves, to navigate both their personal and collective challenges.
Book Bunk was founded in 2017 by writer Wanjiru Koinange and publisher Angela Wachuka. Rooted in a love for literature and storytelling, we believe art is a catalyst for social transformation. In 2018, we partnered with Nairobi City County to restore three public libraries: McMillan Memorial, Eastlands, and Kaloleni. Our work spans fundraising, architectural restoration, library management, and the design of arts and skills-based community programmes.
